Good Day, Mavens!

You know what’s coming? Yes, I know, sale season. But sale season means fall and winter season as well! Traveling through Winter and Spring season has taught me many things. One of them is that I know how to layer my outfit better. As many as you mavens now, I love colors, even during cold weather. Why can’t you be the sunshine that everyone needs? I live in Indonesia and we don’t have such seasons. However, I lived in Germany once and have traveled to Europe most of the time. One of my favorite things to do during winter season was when i got to just sit in my room, stare into my closet, and just imagining what things will i wear tomorrow…or in 2 hours ahead. I sometime imagine what colors should i pick, what shoes that’ll match my coats, and most importantly, how do i layer my outfit?

The importance of a good layering is surely cannot be underrated. A decent layering to your outfit will determine whether your look is exciting or boring. But my mavens, worry not! I’m here to share my experience and what I have learned when it is down to outfit layering.

This layering theory does not only apply during such seasons, but they are actually applied to your everyday wear as well. Doesn’t necessarily have to be coats and such, they can be as easy as cardigans and blazers as well. With this post, I’d like to share my theory in outfit layering. Since fall/winter season require the most fabric and layers, I will demonstrate this through cold season perspectives, which still, the theory can be applied to your everyday wear.

My ultimate secret of a good layering is to combine both dark and light colors. The right positioning of each and every element is important. Why is it? Positioning the color of your look will help to make your outfit looks more dynamic and eye pleasing. Everyone will think that you are a fashionista or some sort of art directors or something.

  • My always go-to positioning is to firstly, choose a basic color as your base. This one is my shirt. As you can see in some of my looks below, my base color is either a white shirt or a blue shirt. This is classified as a light color.

  • Secondly, to top my shirt, i choose dark colors such as grey, brown color, and navy blue. As you can see on the picture, i wear sweaters so i don’t get cold (duh!) and to top of my base light color. BUT, it works the other way around. If you pick a bright color to top off your shirt, your coat needs to be in the contrary.

  • To top things off, coat. You don’t have to bring bunch of clothes while traveling. Pick two! Dark coat, Light coat. Below, you can see that i wear my light coat if my 2nd layer is dark, and i will wear my dark coat if my 2nd layer is light. Not only coat, but you can also apply this if you decide to wear a simple outter. Like a kimono styled outter or a bomber jacket!

  • To complete the look, top it off with a chic bag! I always bring my favorite army messenger bag by Prada - very light and chic!

If you see my layering pattern, the harmony would go like this: LIGHT-DARK-LIGHT or the complete opposite, DARK-LIGHT-DARK. But, if you want to take more risk (which i encourage you to), a sweater + coat that come in the same color scheme will create beautiful one hues to your look. Totally worth the try! Here are some pictures or real representations on how do i dress myself during cold/semi-cold seasons:
